CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Yu Kanda
CANON: D. Gray-man
CANON REFERENCE: D. Gray-man
AGE: 17 (aged down one year)
GENDER: Male
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: HS - 11th Year

APPEARANCE: uniform & casual
PERSONALITY: If anyone tells you that Kanda is the fluffiest and friendly person ever, then punch them in the face because they are lying through their teeth.

One look at Kanda would dispel that myth pretty fast. Kanda comes across as a stoic, antisocial individual with the tendency to stab first and ask questions later with just one glare. He may be pretty, but whatever beauty he has is skin deep or so buried underneath all of that "che" and "tch" that it'll take years to dig it up again. He has little patience for "chatter" or any kind of social interaction, preferring to deal with people in his own blunt and straightforward way. His manner comes off as brusque and even cruel at times. He hates babying people and if you can't take care of yourself, then you don't deserve his respect. He's not going to waste his time picking up your messes or saving you from dangers you shouldn't be exposed to. When he isn't being reticent and prickly, then Kanda's most likely angry. Patience and understanding are not his strong suits. His volatile temper almost always ends in violence which is Kanda's go-to for everything. He hates naivety in all of its many forms and can't stand softhearted idiots. He has a habit of coming off as arrogant at times, usually during battle, which is really just a strong confidence in his skills and abilities.

A ...positive trait of Kanda's personality is his ability to get things done. There's little that can distract Kanda from his goal. His concentration is top notch and he utilizes his time and efforts in the best way to accomplish the task at hand. Put a wall in front of Kanda and he's breaking it down. Of course on the other hand, subtlety is a concept lost on Kanda. He's a great believer in smashing your way through obstacles, rather than tip-toeing. That's not to say that he's the type that leaps without looking. He has enough survival sense to observe the situation in front of him, but either way he's going to end up shoving his way through. His ability to get things done is spectacular because he is not hindered by others. He rarely takes the time to hold people's hands, preferring to go first and leave them at the mercy of their own smarts. He doesn't even take a perverse pleasure in seeing them suffer. He just completely ignores them.

So after sorting through those "che" and "tches", you may discover the heart that Kanda has, no matter how much he denies it. There are a few people that Kanda has let his brusque guard down for, and he shows that he values them by looking after them in his own way. Whether it's through yelling or kicking or looking after their backs in battle, Kanda has proved that even the most prickly individual can still be a good person underneath. Just don't let him hear you. Unfortunately, Kanda's trust is rare. Any mistakes with it will inevitably damage whatever feelings Kanda holds for you and there's little that can resolve it. He lets his hatred for one person pollute his feelings for others very easily, and holds very strong grudges.

Kanda is fueled by anger. Anger at the ones responsible for his present condition, anger at himself, and anger at everyone else. It all manifests in the way he treats others curtly and coldly. He has no interest in making friends after what happened to him in the past and views attachments as handicaps. You can't fight if you're worried about someone else on the battle field. He understands that those attachments sometimes force people to make the wrong decisions and thus, has distanced himself to avoid that kind of situation. Kanda hates people that are ruled first and foremost by their emotions. Unfortunately, he hasn't realized that he's the same, except he's consumed by his hatred rather than a compassion for others.

Further in canon, Kanda is shown to have softened his rough and prickly personality somewhat. This shows that he has the potential to "lighten up" and that he isn't as two-dimensional as he seems. It comes to the point when his regret and guilt finally win over his hatred for the ones responsible for his tragic past. He stops focusing on himself and instead, focuses on the people he can actually call comrades. Sure, he may still like to resort to violence at the first sign of trouble and he's more likely to beat you up than shake your hand, but he's definitely less aggressive than he was before.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

blood manipulation : Kanda has the power to manipulate and solidify his own blood into different shapes. He cannot use other people's blood. His body can regenerate the lost blood at an extremely fast rate as well which prevents him from getting dizzy or sick from blood loss. It takes a lot of concentration to shape his blood however, and usually the objects he can shape are short lived. The only object he can permanently solidify is his long sword, or katana which he keeps on his person at all times.

His other techniques include forming projectile weapons in the form of large insects and creating another sword identical to the one he already has, which enables him to fight with two swords. The techniques usually last about one hour if Kanda is not heavily injured or tired. He has the potential to create new techniques, but it requires a lot of work and time.

drastically enhanced reflexes and slow regeneration : Both of these abilities were artificially "inserted", so they require willful activation on Kanda's part. The veins around his eye become prominent when he activates either of these abilities. His reflexes become significantly better, improving both reaction time and speed, at a cost of straining his body. He can only maintain this condition for fifteen minutes at the most. His slow regeneration is easier to handle, but still leaves him feeling very tired at his current state.

sword fighting : Kanda is a skilled swordsman thanks to the strict physical and training regimen he's been practicing since the age of eight. He's not superhuman though.

AU HISTORY: As a child, Kanda was brought up in a scientific facility in Japan with no memory of his parents or childhood from before the age of five. He was experimented on for the following three years due as part of the Second project. The Second project was intended to test a theory. What if you could somehow genetically "insert" mutations from dead mutants into a live subject? The dead mutant in question possessed enhanced reflexes, as well as regeneration. The transfer to the live subject, in this case Kanda, was finally successful after many failed attempts. After the initial experiment, Kanda was allowed to interact with another test subject, eventually becoming fast friends with him. Unfortunately, the experiments continued, this time testing Kanda's abilities and frequently forced Kanda beyond his limit. His friend endured similar experiments except he ultimately went insane and killed the researchers involved in the project. Kanda put an end to the massacre, using his just discovered blood manipulation ability to put the boy down for good.

Needless to say, Kanda came out of the accident deeply traumatized. The Japanese government covered up the incident and passed him to an orphanage, ignoring his status as a mutant. There he was adopted by an English tourist and traveled with him back to his home in Great Britain. They spent the following year traveling Europe and Asia together, but could not find a place where anti-mutant sentiment did not thrive.

The foster home helped Kanda to recover somewhat, but the lab incident had left its scars. Despite his foster father's hopes for him, Kanda grew up to be cold, stoic, and violent. He was enrolled into Xavier Institute at the age of 12 in hopes that he'd do better with kids that were like him. And while it looks like things haven't changed, Kanda has managed to open up to a select few and has learned to challenge his anger in more...productive ways.

It doesn't matter if you're new or if you've always been here at the institute. Stop taking shortcuts through the memorial garden. I don't care if you're late to class. Anyone who so much as breaks a stalk of grass will be gutted. [he grinds out these words painfully, as if already imagining the culprit choking around his blade.]

So don't be stupid and stick to the god damn path.
